The effect of altitude on anxiety level during climbing mount Süphan

Objective: This research was done on mountaineers who are mountaineering and doing natural sports regularly for aim to find out the effects of altitude on their anxiety levels. Methods: During the Süphan Mountain climbing, state anxiety and trait anxiety tests were applied to 35 mountaineers. These tests were applied after mountaineers start to relax in four stages including; the beginning of climbing, first camp, peak and the end of climbing. Results: There were significant difference in the state anxiety levels but there was no relationship between the trait anxiety levels. There were correlations among the trait anxiety level and the state anxiety levels at the beginning of climbing, and the end of climbing. Conclusion: This was the first study about the effects of high altitude over 4000 m on anxiety in Turkey. High altitude affects only on the state anxiety. The success of reaching to the peak and achieving the goal may be the reason of decreasing levels in state anxiety level at the end of climbing.
