Foot morphology in premature and term infants

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine values of foot morphology in premature and term infants. Methods: We studied 60 premature infants (30 male, 30 female) aged 35-37 post menstrual week, and 60 term infants (30 male, 30 female). Bimalleolus width, heel width, foot length and foot width were determined in all infants. Results: All values were statistically higher in term infants. Birth weight, length, foot length and heel width were higher in male newborns, only bimalleolus width was higher in premature female infants. Conclusion: These findings might be useful in examination of premature and term infants. Foot length measurement might be useful in assessment of gestational age in several branches of medicine such as anatomy, pathologic anatomy (fetopathology), forensic medicine, medical imaging, obstetrics and pediatrics.
