Evaluation of fatigue and sleep quality of caregivers of advanced stage cancer patients

Objective: The aim of this interventional study was to determine education and counseling service of nurses relating to sleep and fatigue problems of caregivers of patients with advanced stage colorectal and gastric cancer. Methods: Sample of survey was composed of 30 people. Care Givers’ Presentation Form, Patient Presentation Form, Form of Patient Symptoms’ Management, Evaluation Form of Caregivers’ Education and Counseling Service, Piper Fatigue Scale, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Scale, Self-Care Agency Scale were used to collect survey’s data. Face to face training was applied to caregivers about self care and symptom management of patient’s at the first chemotherapy cure of their patients. After this, counseling was made for caregivers via telephone according to their needs related to symptom management and self care till the end of six months’ treatment (after receiving first and last dose of each months’ cure). Percentage, Test of Differences between Paired Two Groups, ANOVA test in repeated measurements and correlation test were used in evaluation of data. Results: A significant decline was observed in the mean scores of quality of sleep, fatigue and self-care power of caregivers’ at the end of sixth cure and a significant difference was found between mean scores they obtained from first and sixth cure. (p<0.05). Conclusion: Accordance with the results obtained from the research telephone counseling and education on a regular basis relating to symptom management of patients and self care of caregivers were recommended for caregivers’ according to their needs.
