Correlation between sex hormones and Hoffmann reflexes and nonverbal intelligence: Differences with sex and hand preference

Objective: This study was planned to investigate the relationship between Hoffmann reflexes (H-reflex) and sex hormones and nonverbal intelligence in female and male subjects. Methods: An Edinburgh Handedness Questionnaire was performed on 21 volunteer University Students for hand preference. Foot preference was determined according to the kicking ball preference. Hand skill for both left and right hands were tested by using peg moving test. H-reflexes were recorded on both right and left leg. Nonverbal intelligence (IQ) was determined with Cattell's Culture Fair Intelligence Test. Serum testosterone and estradiol levels of the subjects were measured with commercial kits. Results: In the righ handed males (n=8) IQ correlated to H-reflex area, left hand peg moving time and the estradiol levels while in the right handed females (n=6) IQ correlated to estradiol levels. Left handed females (n=7) had also significant relationship between IQ and left H-reflex area. Right handed males as well as right and left handed females showed no significant relationship between H-reflex (latency, amplitude and area) and testosterone and estradiol levels. Conclusion: Moreover, as levels of IQ increases, right H-reflex area decreases, right and left H-reflex amplitude increases, left hand skill decreases and levels of serum estradiol decreases in right handed males. As IQ of right handed females increases, serum estradiol levels decreases. As IQ of left handed females increases, left H-reflex area decreases.
