Grade III and IV hemorrhoid prevalence in the early postpartum period

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hemorrhoid due to chronic venous sufficiency in pregnant women in the early postpartum period. Methods: 1003 females delivered by vaginal way were included in this study. The participants were examined in the early postpartum period and their grade III and IV hemorrhoids, gravidity, number of parity, the presence of varices, constipation, obesity, occupation, traway time and baby weight were detected and noted. Results: Grade III and IV hemoroids were detected in 125 of 1003 patients (12.4%). Mean age was 26 (range 17-43), mean gravidity number was 2.18 and parity was 1. Hemorrhoids and varices were together in 9 patients (7.2%). Constipation ratio was 40% (n=50), obesity rate was 8.8% (n=11). Mean baby weight was 3312 g, 96% of the patients were housewife and mean traway time was 4 hour. Conclusion: The incidence of postpartum hemorrhoids was high and the hemorrhoids cause morbidity in postpartum period and follow-up, treatment and prevention of this disease are very important.
