The levels of serum nitric oxide in patients with asthma

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the levels of nitrite, nitrate and nitrite+nitrate, which are the derivatives of serum NO in the patients with asthma and to find out whether NO in the serum has a prognostic value in medical treatment of asthma. Method: A control group of 20 healthy people and a study group of 43 patients of asthma were participated in this study. The patients were included into groups according to the intensity of their asthma. The nitrite and nitrate levels of serum NO derivatives were determined by Griess reaction. Results: The mean level of nitrite+nitrate in the serum were found to be 45.8 mmol/L in the the first group of patients with low intermittance and persistence. The mean level of nitrite+nitrate in the serum were 54.3 mmol/L in the second group of patients with medium and heavy persistence. The differences in the two groups was not significant. Conclusion: The obtained data was interpreted as serum nitrite and nitrate concentrations are not primary markers in the monitoring the treatment of the patients with asthma, but they may be used as secondary prognostic markers.
