The effects of alcohol-induced oxidative stress on some antioxidants

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of alcohol-induced oxidative stress on some antioxidants. Method: The study group consisted of 72 healthy male subjects who regularly consumed alcohol at least once a week (138.3 + 110.5 g/ day) for minimum five years (15.0 + 6.9 yrs). The control group consisted of 30 healthy male subjects who had any alcohol in their life. The erytfirocyte catalase activity, serum zinc, copper, ceruloplasmin, uric acid, AST, ALT, GGT, total protein, albumin, and total bilirubin levels were determined in all subjects. Results: Significant elevations were found at the levels of copper, uric acid, protein, AST and GGT, but the other parameters were not significantly different in thestudy group when compared to the controls. Conclusion: It is concluded that undergoing alcohol-induced oxidative stress chronically does not affect catalase activity.
