The effects of acute submaximal exercise on immune system

Objective: This study was performed to investigate the effects of acute submaximal exercise on immune system. Methods: Nineteen healthy and sedentary men aged 25-30 years performed bicycle ergometer exercise of 60 minutes equivalent to 60% of their VO2max. CD4+, CD8+ and serum immunglobulins were determined in the blood samples obtained pre-and post-exercise. Results: Lymphocyte, leucocyte and granulocyte counts increased and CD4+ cells decreased with exercise. No difference was observed in the values of IgG, IgM, IgA and CD8+. Conclusion: Exercises performed in 60% of VO2max for 60 minutes may depress the immune system.
