Reactions of Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid & White, 1919) Chitwood, 1949 race 1 against some pepper lines and varieties in controlled conditions

Affecting yield and quality of many vegetable varieties across to the world, root knot nematodes can also cause severe damages on many pepper varieties. The adverse effects of environment and human health triggered by the chemical use make researchers to find an alternative to this management treatment for nematode control. Use of resistant varieties drove enormous attention as one of important management strategies recently. Use of resistant varieties is a preferable cheap and environmentally friendly method that has a potential to be an alternative to the chemical control methods. In this study, the reactions of some spice production appropriate red pepper varieties and lines against Meloidogyne incognita race 1 was determined. Root knot nematode species confirmation was made by Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (PAGE), and perineal pattern morphology. Race determination of nematode was made by North Carolina host differential test. The experiment was designed as a randomized complete block design with 4 replications. Total of 16 lines and 2 varieties were used in the study. All lines and varieties were evaluated by egg mass-reaction scale (0-5) index. The study revealed that all lines and varieties of pepper were sensitive to M. incognita race 1.The resistant control variety, CM334, presented 0 egg mass (no nematode) indices in the study.
