Preparation of thermo-responsive shape memory copolyester thermoplastic elastomer (COPE) and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) polymer blends

Thermo-responsive shape memory polymers (SMP) are smart materials that have the ability to change their shape in the presence of a heat stimuli. In this study, Thermo-responsive shape memory polymer blends which contain different portions of copolyester thermoplastic elastomer (COPE) and poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) polymers were prepared by using melt mixing method. Morphological, thermal, mechanical and shape memory properties of the prepared blends were investigated. The polymer blend containing 50 wt% COPE and 50 wt% EVA showed co-continuous morphology, while other compositions were found to exhibit droplet morphology. While the melting and crystallization temperature of the COPE polymer increased in the presence of EVA, the melting and crystallization temperatures of the EVA polymer did not change. Thermo-responsive shape memory property analyses showed that the shape fixing (Rf) and shape recovery (Rr) ratios were increased when the amount of EVA increase in the polymer blend. 30C-70E blend exhibited 94.88 % shape fixing ratio and 89.20 % shape recovery ratio indicating the best shape-memory property. On the other hand, 50C-50E exhibited optimum properties with relatively higher deformability and modarate Rf and Rr values. The shape memory test of the 50C-50E polymer blend in hot water showed that after the material was deformed and cooled, it retained its temporary shape, and when it was reheated, it quickly returned to its permanent shape.
