THE SUBLIME AND THE CREATION OF IDENTITY IN MINOR LITERATURE IN A COMPARISON OF “THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA” AND “THE PREY”

This paper, which suggests a twofold approach, will first examine the fish-fisherman-searelationship with reference to Kant’s two different types of sublime, namely the ‘MathematicalSublime’ and the ‘Dynamic Sublime’, in two works with similar subjects, written by twoeminent twentieth century authors: Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea and BilgeKarasu’s The Prey. This paper also aims to serve as an account of Kant’s sublime usingcomparative literary examples as a way to make what Kant has to say more explicit. In thesecond part, the paper will argue that, through analysis of the two works, their constructionsof identity, and the workings of the Sublime in major and minor literature, The Prey rightlybelongs to minor literature. However, it should be indicated that a detailed comparison of thetwo pieces in terms of their literary characteristics is the subject matter of another essay and beyond the scope of the interests of the discussion here. In other words, in the second part ofthis essay, it is only attempted to make a brief comparative analysis of the sublime as it relatesto the creation of identity in minor literature. It is also worth emphasizing that this is just analternative way of exploring the sublime.
