THE GENEALOGY OF GENEALOGY: FROM HUMAN ALL TOO HUMAN TO BEYONG GOOD AND EVIL, THE PATH LEADING TO GENEALOGICAL ANALYSIS IN NIETZSCHE’S PHILOSOPHY

Thanks primarily to Deleuze’s important Nietzsche studies in the 1960s, “genealogy” has since then been considered in the history of Nietzsche interpretation, as one of the essential concepts offering access to the German philosopher’s thought. Quite interestingly, this concept appears only towards the end of Nietzsche’s intellectual activity in On the Genealogy of Morals (1887), and disappears forthwith with the same book. In this paper, I will focus on some of Nietzsche’s texts before On the Genealogy of Morals to explore the evolution and emergence of this enigmatic but nonetheless important concept. I will also clarify the philosophical role assigned to it and argue that genealogy, which, at first glance seems as not belonging to philosophical terminology, is one of the pillars of the Nietzschean project of reshaping Western philosophy around the question of values.
