Serum lipid profile in patients with myofascial pain syndrome

Objectives: In this study serum lipid profile of patients myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) were investigated and compared with healthy controls. Materials and Methods: Thirty eight patients (34 female, 4 male) who had MPS with characteristic trigger points, especially on the periscapular, servical and shoulder regions were included in this study. Forty two (38 female, 4 male) age matched healthy subjects were assigned as a control group. All of the subjects were sedentary healthy housewives. Results: No significant difference was observed in terms of sex, age, height, menopausal period, smoking or BMI among the groups. Total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c) levels were not significantly different between the MPS and control groups. Conclusion: In conclusion we didn’t find an association between serum lipid levels and MPS to contrary prior studies. More extensive investigation of lipid and lipoprotein levels is required to determine whether high lipid levels are the cause or result of MPS.
