The Evaluation of Relationship Between Retinal Sensitivity Measured by Microperimetry and Ganglion Cell Complex After Macular Hole Surgery
Objective: The objection of this study is to analyze the relationship between macular ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness and retinal sensitivity after vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling in eyes with idiopathic macular hole (IMH). Material and Method: Eighteen eyes of 18 patients with an IMH treated by vitrectomy with ILM peeling were examined retrospectively. Intravitreal injection of Brilliant Blue G was performed in order to make the ILM more visible. GCC thickness measured by spectral domain optical coherence tomography, and retinal sensitivity measured by microperimetry were determined at 3 months after the vitrectomy. Results: The macular hole in all eyes was closed after the initial surgery. Reduce in retinal sensitivity was associated with the decrease in GCC thickness at all macular quadrants. In addition, GCC thickness in inferior quadrants was thinner than superior quadrants and retinal sensitivity was lower in inferior quadrants than in superior quadrants. Conclusion: Though the GCC thickness was correlated with the retinal sensitivity in the central 10 degrees at 3 months after the vitrectomy with ILM peeling for IMH, this correlation was not statistically significant. Further studies including a larger number of participants and a longer follow-up are needed to verify our findings.
