Herding in BIST: An Investigation Using the Methodology of Hwang and Salmon

Herding which is a subject of reasearch in social-psychology is also referred to in the study of stock markets as investors' acting in parallel with the decision of the market when trading thus ignoring their own ideas. This is crucial since it contradicts with the reference point of the efficient market hypothesis, the fact that investors are rational. There are various methodologies to measure herding in stock markets. The purpose of this study is to examine the existence of herd behavior in BIST (Borsa İstanbul) using the methodology of Hwang and Salmon (2004). In this context the daily, weekly and monthly data of 15 different industries in BIST were employed. In conclusion, we observed that the investors could show herd behavior in some periods. Besides it can be asserted that herd behavior was more visible in the short range frequencies and investors were proned to herd more in financial sector stock trading compared with the real sector.
