Escherichia coli, Enterobacteriaceae ailesinde yer alan Gram negatif, fakültatif anaerob, hareketli, spor oluşturmayan çomak şeklinde bir bakteridir. Patojenik E. coli’ler oluşturduğu hastalığın türüne ve sahip olduğu virulens özelliklerine göre sınıflandırılmaktadır. E. coli suşları bağırsak dışı enfeksiyonlara (ekstraintestinal) ve bağırsak enfeksiyonlarına (intestinal) neden olanlar olarak ikiye ayrılmaktadır. Diyarejenik E. coli patotipleri; enterotoksijenik E. coli, enteropatojenik E. coli, Vero- veya Shiga-toksin üreten E. coli, enterohemorajik E. coli, enteroagregatif E. coli, enteroinvaziv E. coli ve diffuz aderent E. coli’dir. Ekstraintestinal patojenik E. coli’ler; septisemik patojenik E. coli, üropatojenik E. coli, avian patojenik E. coli, meme patojenik E. coli ve rahim enfeksiyonlarına neden olanlar, endometriyal patojenik E. coli’dir.
