Demographic and clinical features of patients with oral lichen planus

Aim: Oral lichen planus is a chronic, inflammatory disease which is characterized by reticular, erythematous-atrophic, and erosive lesions. The aim of this study was to investigate the demographic and clinical features of oral lichen planus patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 48 patients admitted to the outpatient clinic and “Face and Oral Mucosa Council” between November 2006 and June 2008 who were diagnosed with oral lichen planus were included into this study. The clinical features (reticular, erosive, erythematous-atrophic, mixed type) and localization of the lesions, demographic features of the patients, duration of the disease, possible triggering drug intake, smoking, presence of diabetes mellitus, hepatitis markers, oral candidiasis, prosthesis and amalgam restoration, and malignant transformation were evaluated. Results: Of the 48 patients, 34 (70.8%) were female, 14 (29.2%) were male. The mean age was 55.4±12.5 years, and the median duration of the disease was 12 months. Reticular lesions were observed in 26 patients (54.2%) and mixed lesions involving reticular, erythematous-atrophic and erosive and areas were observed in 22 patients (45.8%). Erosive lesions were more frequently observed in patients 60 years of age and over, and were associated with a possible triggering medication (p<0.05). Conclusion: It is indicated that mixed type lesions together with erosive areas are frequently observed in patients 60 years of age and over and by this study, it is also emphasized that drug usage should be checked in such cases.
