Generalized pruritus and systemic diseases: A retrospective study

Generalized pruritus without primary skin manifestations may be the presenting symptom of cholestasis, uremia, malignant, hematologic, endocrine, and metabolic diseases. In this study, 50 cases of generalized pruritus, who were followed up in Ege University Medical Faculty Dermatology Clinic between January 1996 - January 2001, was evaluated to determine the incidence of associated systemic diseases retrospectively. Eleven cases (%22) of diabetes mellitus, 13 (%26) cases wtih emotional stress and psychiatric diseases, 9 (%18) cases of anemia, 4 (%8) cases of chronic renal failure, 3 (%6) cases of thyroid diseases, 2 (%4) cases of Hodgkin lymphoma, and 2 (%4) cases of chronic hepatitis C infection accompanied the pruritus. Dermatological examination revealed 20 (%40) cases with mycotic infections and 10 (%20) cases with xerosis. The relation between the duration of generalized pruritus and associated systemic diseases was evaluated statistically.
