Sleep quality and fatigue in pregnant women

Aim: The purpose of the study was to determine the sleep quality and fatigue in pregnant women. Material and Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study involved 198 pregnant women. Data were collected from October 2007 to July 2008 in two hospitals in the city of Manisa. The questionnaire had three parts. The first covered socio-demographic characteristics and the woman's background reproductive health. The second part consisted of The Brief Fatigue Inventory which was developed by the Anderson Cancer Center. The third part consisted of the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI. The data were collected using face-to-face interviews and Manisa Health Directorate gave permission for the study. The participants were informed about the study and their verbal permission to participate was obtained. Results: The mean age of the women was 26.5 (standard deviation [SD]=4.7) years and half of women had elementary education. The median point of the PSQI was found to be 6.38±3.46. The total point of the PSQI is 0-21. In this study, 54% of pregnant women stated that their sleep quality was poor (>5). Sleep quality was found to be good in pregnant women who stated that they slept enough and rested during the day. There was not found to be any relationship between the age groups of pregnant women, their educational level to sleep quality scores. The mean point of fatigue was found to be 5.58±1.97. A positive relationship between the general level of fatigue and the length of time to the woman sat down all day was found. Conclusion: When sleep disorder scores in pregnant women increase, fatigue scores also increase.
