Urinary incontinence frequency and affecting factors in women aged over 18

ry Aim: The aim of this study to assess urinary incontinence prevalance among women visiting the gynecology outpatient clinic and the effects of various sociodemographic and medical factors to the incidence of urinary incontinence. Materials and Methods: Research was conducted on women over the age of 18 , between March 2012 and June 2012 at Kocaeli Derince Obstetrics and Gynecology Training and Research Hospital. Patients who were admitted to our outpatient clinic filled out a UDI-6 form which includes sociodemographic characteristics and questions for urinary incontinence. A total of 555 patients were studied. The data transferred to the computer were analyzed using a SPSS 17.0 statistical program. Statistical analysis chi-square test and one-way analysis of variance methods were used. A p value of <0.05 was considered significant. Results: A total of 249 (44.8%) urinary incontinence patients were determined. By type of stress urinary incontinence, 95 (17.1%), urge urinary incontinence, 46 (8.3%), mixed urinary incontinence, 96 (17.3%), overactive bladder, 12 (2.1%) overactive bladder were detected. The age, number of vaginal deliveries, body mass index (BMI) and menopause were determined as significant risk factors. Conclusion: The study group of about two-fifths of women have urinary incontinence. Various sociodemographic and medical factors affect the frequency of urinary incontinence. To reduce this common problem, BMI and multiparity should be combated. Women with urinary incontinence should be encouraged to contact their physician.
