Why Motivational Interviewing Important for Patients with Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is one of the most important chronic disease that decreases life quality and functions which give rise to numerous personal and economic problems in the world. Problems attributed to dopaminergic system lead to lack of motivation and have the patients encounter difficulties in fulfilling their daily personal and social roles. Motivational interviewing can be used at psychiatric clinics, out-patient clinics, and community mental health centers such as establishing collaboration with chronic mental challenged patients, promoting patient self-care, and helping patients develop healthy life style behaviors. It is of important for the psychiatric and mental health nurses, who care schizophrenia diagnosed patients, to establish a therapeutic collaboration via Motivational interviewing method in order to access the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors related to the problematic areas of the patients.
