Role of Sleep in The Risk and Severity of Type 2 Diabetes

Nowadays, sleep disorders are common problems among the children and adults. In this article, the relationship between metabolic consequences and eating behaviour and sleep disorders, and the effect of diabetes on sleep will be summarized. In sleep disorders, while deterioration in the matabolic consequences are observed as a result of the increase of sympathetic activity, cortisol levels, and the decrease of growth hormone, there is an increase in the food intake resulting from the change in leptin and ghrelin secretions. These changes increase the risk of weight gain, obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. In the other hand, the complications of diabetes may contribute to sleep disorders. In addition to the current approach for controlling glucose level in blood, improving the sleep quality of individulas with diabetes is also important.
