SPATIOTEMPORAL CHANGES OF KÖPPEN-GEIGER CLIMATE TYPES IN TURKEY

According to climate projections made on a global scale, the Mediterranean basin in which Turkey located is estimated to increase 4-6 °C temperature by the end of the 21. century and the rainfall is projected to decrease. With downscaling methods, regional climate projections also provide similar results. In studies researching trends in climate elements in Turkey, especially in the summer months, the temperature increase is very evident, and precipitation is known to be seen in the decreases. In this study, temporal spatial changes between the years 1971-2010 in the Köppen-Geiger climate are examined instead of the trend in climate change. For this purpose, the average monthly temperature and monthly rainfall data for the 183 station of the Meteorological Directorate (MGM) were obtained and the Köppen-Geiger climate was classied for each year and trends in these numbers were explored. According to the results, temporal increase and spatial enlargement tendencies have been determined in the Csa, especially the Mediterranean climate. Conversely, the study of narrowing in the D-class cold climatic regions showed that similar changes have been made in other parts of the world. With the interpretation of the ndings obtained, it is understood that the main and key climate types for the Köppen-Geiger climate classication are turkey. As a result of the study, it was also understood that the Köppen- Geiger climate classication could be used not only for climate type and climate trend determination, but also in the determination of dry and humid periods.
