An Analysis of Mathematics and Mathematics Values of Science, Mathematics and Elementary School Teachers in Terms of Demographic Variables

Values that we owe are special to us and give directions to our daily lives. We construct them by interacting with the world we live in ((Akıncı, 2005; Özensel,2003). In this sense, behaviorism, cognitive and constructivist approaches produce different value in our educational applications. Behaviorist and cognitive theories based on objectivism, they see the knowledge as independent from knower and accept the view that this knowledge can be transferred to learner. An alternative view called constructivism is based on subjectivism and it accepts the knowledge as an active construct of learner (Jaworski, 1994). In the process of construction, culture and language are important factors for learners. Relationships among values, culture and language can be seen in mathematics as well. Durmuş and Bıçak (2006) developed a scale to reveal these relations for pre-service teachers. Since there is a need for a smiliar study for in-service teachers, the scale is redeveloped and transformed to a newer form. In addition, sex, branch and graduated faculty and political tendency variables are also analyzed. Method Participants Science and technology, mathematics and elementary scool teachers working in Bolu are participated to this study (N=194). Instrument Scale developed by Durmuş ve Bıçak (2006) is updated and applied to in-service science and technology, mathematics and elementary school teachers. Process Developed scale is applied to in-service teachers working in Bolu. Findings The analysis of the research questions were tabulated in tables. When the means of the positive and constructive values of the participants were compared, there was a significant difference in favor of the constructivist values (t193=22,08; p0.05; Positive values: t192= 2,13; p
