Static analysis of two-bay coupled shear walls with flexible beam-wall connections

In this study, the static analysis of two-bay coupled shear walls with flexible beam-wall connections is considered. The method proposed in this study is based on the principle of Continuous Connection Method (CCM). According to this technique, coupled shear walls are considered as connected shear walls and the beams at story levels, called connecting beams, are modeled as continuously distributed lamellas of equivalent stiffness (1). The governing differential equations, in the CCM, are the compatibility equations written for the vertical displacements at the midpoints of the two bays. There is a contribution pertaining to the elastic beam-wall connections in these equations. At the end of the study, the first example investigates the effect of the connection rigidity on the maximum top displacement and the total bottom moment, and the second example considers the case of different connection rigidities in three regions along the height. All results have been carried out, first using the FORTRAN program prepared, and then with the SAP2000 (4) and ANSYS (5) structural analysis programs and are presented comparatively via tables and graphs.
