Investigation of white layer formation in liquid nitriding of AISI 1030 and 4140 steels

Liquid nitriding process produces a nitrided case on the surface of the materials. This nitrided case consists of two layers; a compound layer (white layer) in the outer and diffusion layer near to base metal. In this study the thickness of white layer formation in liquid nitriding process of gears manufactured from AISI 1030 and 4140 is investigated. The effect of process parameters on white layer formation is assed. The experimental studies showed that, the composition of the bath and material and nitriding time identify the obtainable white layer thickness.
