The effect of the level of a single stiffening beam on the lateral displacement of two-bay coupled shear walls

The method proposed in this study is based on the principle of Continuous Connection Method (CCM). According to this technique, coupled shear walls are considered as connected shear walls and the beams at story levels, called connecting beams, are modeled as continuously distributed lamellas of equivalent stiffness (I). This representation renders possible the expressions of structural properties in terms of height variable. The governing differential equations, in the CCM, are the compatibility equations written for the vertical displacements at the midpoints of the two bays. The second order linear differential equation set thus obtained, are solved using the boundary conditions at the bottom and lop of the shear walls and the continuity conditions for the stiffening beams. In the second step of the problem, the horizontal displacement function is found by applying the moment-curvature relation for the shear wall. In this study, CCM has been used to handle the static analysis of a coupled shear wall on a rigid foundation having stiffening beams. As an example, the variation of the top displacement is examined for the shear wall with a stiffening beam at each story height one at a time. During these calculations, using the FORTRAN program prepared, the SAP2000 (6) and ANSYS (7) structural analysis programs, the shear wall has been modeled and the best levels for the stiffening beams are found for a selected example shear wall with two rows of openings.
