The effect of faulting on soils: Gerede (Bolu) segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone

In this study, in order to determine the effect of faulting on soils the Gerede (Bolu) segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) was choosen. NAFZ is one of the most important strike-slip faults of the world. During both historical and instrumental periods, many eartthquakes with high magnitudes took place on the Gerede (Bolu) segment of NAFZ. In the study area the Ms: 7,4 Gerede-Bolu earthquake on February 1, 1944 is the most destructive earthquake recorded in the region. Undisturbed, block samples from four trenches dug at various points on the Gerede (Bolu) segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) were collected. For each trench 3 consolidation tests in the vertical direction, totaling 12 for four trenches were performed and preconsolidation pressure values were obtained. The relationship between preconsolidation pressure values and effective vertical overburden stress was evaluated in terms of the distance from the fault.
