The effect of a Galactagogue herbal tea on weight gain during newborn period
Aim: To investigate the effect of Humana Still-Tee, on weight gain during the newborn period. Method: Sixty-three mothers who gave birth in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of our hospital were randomly enrolled to the study. The mothers were separated into three groups according to the recommended beverages: Group 1; Humana Still-Tee, group 2; Linden (Tilia silvestris) tea, and group 3; water. Results: The mean age of the mothers was 28+5.2 years. Of the mothers 42.9 % (n-27) were primary school grad¬uates, 22.2 % (n-14) were smokers, and 68.3 % (n-43) were of middle sociseconomic class. Of the babies 57.1 % (n=36) were girls with a mean birth weight of 3,240+425 g. The mean weight of the babies was 4,244+463 g at the end of the first month. Total weight gain of the babies in the Humana Still-Tee group (l,370±133 g) was significantly higher than those of Linden (835+128 g) and water (807+85 g) groups (p=0.001). Conclusions: Recommendation of a galactagogue herbal teas to nursing mothers may be useful in increasing breast milk, after consultation about adequate fluid intake during lactation. However, there is need for further investigations on this issue.
