Efficiency of Ferrous Sulphate and Ferric Polymaltose Treatment in Iron Deficiency Anemia and The Effects of Multivitamin Support on Relevant Therapies

Objective: Iron deficiency is an important morbidity that causes immune system deficiency, behavioral and cognitive problems besides anemia. In Turkey, 400 IU/day vitamin D supplementation is given to all babies and sometimes this support is given as multivitamin. In infancy, ıron deficiency anemia IDA is also seen occasionally and iron treatment is given to children. In this study, we compared the efficiency ferrous sulphate and ferric polymaltose treatment and the effect of concomitant multivitamin support on therapy. Material and Methods: Two hundred anemic children were randomly assigned to four groups; Group I, Fe+2 ferrous sulphate ; Group II, simultaneous administration of Fe +2 plus multivitamin; Group III, Fe+3 ferric polymaltose ; Group IV, combination of Fe+3 and multivitamin. Iron treatment was given as one daily doses of 3 mg/kg for three months. Complete blood count and ferritin level of these children were examined at the beginning, at the first month and at the end of the treatment. Results: At the end of the treatment, in Groups I and II, increases in hemoglobin and hematocrit values were higher than Group III p
