Before and in the early stages of industrialisation, mining was the undisputed leader in technology. It represented the high-tech of the time. Early mechanisation such as the use of steam engines can be given as a good example of that. With the industrial revolution, other more specialised branches of industry advanced further and the mines became users of these technologies. Hence, today mining technology is well behind other industrial branches. But, now, the mining industry recognises the need for change and advanced technology which relies on remote control, automation and robotics. The number of studies on the matter is rapidly increasing
