Utilization of Chromite Tailings as Hydroilic Filling Material

This paper is concerned with the study of the tailings öf the mineraldressing plant of Eskişehir Kavak Chromite Mine as filling material in the underground openings. The main problem in the production levels of the mine, which employs the "cut-and-fill" method, is the deficiency of mine safety and productivity. The incoherent rock fill is compressed with time and deteriorates the stability of the workings on the upper levels. There are high pressures developing on the workings due to the heavy broken ore mass which constitutes the roof of the workings. This stituation gives rise to an instable roof under which the maintenance of wooden supports is difficult. Hence, due to the failure of the overhand method, the "undercut-and fill" method or, in other words, underhand cut-and-fill method is proposed. This method employs a type of consolidated fill-cemented fill-to prevent the convergence of the roof and walls and to provide a downward-moving stope with a safer roof. Proper fill properties for the mine have been investigated in this research and it has been observed that the most suitable fill material, under the conditions prevailing at Kavak Mine would be, the mixture of cement, 16 per cent in weight and the tailings of the ore-dressing plant which would be placed into the openings by hydraulic means through a system of pipelines after being prepared by hydrocyclones at the surface.
