Magnetic Separation Method in Wastewater Treatment; Removal of Phosphate from Wastewater Using Magnetic Seeding Technique

In this study, the applicability of magnetic separation method to the removal of phosphorous from wastewater using magnetic seeding technique was investigated. The solutions having an initial concentration of 0,645 mmol/l phosphorus and Ca/P molar ratios of 1,67, 3,34, and 5,01, which is equal to times of stichiometric calcium to phosphorous molar ratio of hydroxapatite (HAP) were used. • Precipitation of calcium phosphate from solutions containing magnetite mineral was investigated at a wide pH range. It was concluded that the pH is a main parameter, which effects both total precipitation and the ratio of phosphate removed by magnetite to total precipitation. This effect of pH is-mainly a result of its contribution to the saturation conditions of solutions. Hence, a 2nd order polynomial function between SI of solution and the ratio of phosphate removed by magnetite to total precipitation was obtained. Since homogenous nucleation is unavoidable under the oversaturated solutions, -there is a decrease in the ratio of phosphate removed by magnetite to total precipitation although total precipitation was increased. At the best condition, 70% of phosphate was removed by magnetic separation method
