Investigation of Effect of the Process Parameters on Kerf Angle of the Granite in Abrasive Waterjet Cutting

Abrasive waterjet, a new and alternative cutting method, is effectively used in cutting and machining of hard and strong materials such as rock, steel, aluminium. The quality of machining processes in the method is characterized by the geometry of cut line. Kerf angle is defined as a measurement of inclination occurred at the entry of cut line and undesirable parameter in terms of irregularity of cut line. In this study, effect of some controllable process parameters on kerf angle of the material was investigated. The experimental studies using granite specimens were carried out based on the Taguchi orthogonal experimental design. As a result of the study, kerf angles of specimens increased at high traverse speeds and standoff distances. Increasing of water pressure resulted in increases of kerf angles of specimens contrary to expectations. On the other hand, increasing the abrasive flow rate decreased the kerf angles in insignificant amounts. Moreover, higher kerf angles were obtained with the fine abrasive size.
