Geotermal Heating System of Afyon, Turkey; Its Economy and Role in Reducing the Air Pollution

Turkey located in the Alpine-Himalian Orogenic Belt is one of the countries in the world with abundant geothermal resources. The natural, clean, cheap, reliable and renewable nature of geothermal energy is considered to be an alternative future energy resource. Afyon, is one of the important geothermal fields, suffers from high risk of air pollution. In order to utilise this potential, the construction of Afyon Geothermal Heating System, was initiated in 1994 and put into operation in 1996 with an installed capacity of 10,000 residents out of which 3.970 residence is successfully heated. The heat requirement for every 100 m2 area of residence is 8.484 kCal/h and total energy spent for a the total area of 426.099 m2 is 30.727.300 kCal/h. This is equivalent to the energy produced by burning 7 tph Tunçbilek coal which leads to a savings of 30.000 tpy Tunçbilek coal. If Tunçbilek was burned instead of the use of geothermal energy, every year 743 tons of SOx and 4.950 tons of particulate matter would have been emitted to the atmosphere. The results obtained from Afyon experience reveals that not only the emission of tremendous amounts of pollutants is eliminated but also a cheap energy alternative with an environment friendly fuel is provided
