A Romantic Myth: The Origin of Language

The four eminent philosophers of the XVIIIth century, Vico, Condillac, Rousseau and Herder –although they are classified separately under diverse titles by the mainstream historiography of philosophy– share a certain interest in the problem of the origin of language. This problem which is of great importance and discussed by some other thinkers of the age as well has a characteristic aspect: almost without exception all the relevant philosophers offer a narrative which has a certain mythical structure which refers to the Biblical myth of language. This paper focuses on the astonishing mythical production on the origin of language inserted in the XVIIIth century’s philosophical discourse, and the core of the examination is the epistemological and ontological patterns of conception –especially the persistent interest towards origins and essentialism– occurred in the mythical narratives of philosophers. The connection of this mythical production with romantic tendencies of the age is the final topic of the paper.
