Two Different Epistemologies, Two Different Politics: The Philosophical Roots of Rational and Empirical Politics

Excessive trust on wisdom and science beginning with Renaissance and reaching the ultimate point with Enlightenment gave its best results in the political area. The optimism about wisdom and science’s power created by Enlightenment was interpreted that society could be put into a desired form by rationalist and positivist epistemologies. This point of view became an inspiring source for many rationalist, conventionalist and revolutionist political projects in the last two decades. Those, however, were authoritarian, totalitarian and oppressive regimes uncompromising with the freedom ideal of Enlightenment. The rationalist and positivist paradigms based on the power of wisdom and science became shaking up at the very beginning of 21 century. The opinion suggesting that the science is a structure relating the truth -which could be falsified at any moment - has become gaining respect among the scientists instead of the conventional view taking the wisdom as the comprehension tool and the science as the reflection of truth in the theory. The political and social meanings of this were the illegitimacy of any ideology and the ‘goodness’ perspective based on the scientific thesis and the impropriety of handling social matters by using mechanistic approach.
