Edebiyat, ulusal/milli kimlik, siyasal ve dini kimlik, kültürel kimlik, cinsel kimlik gibi kimliklenme oluşumlarına da doğrudan katkıda bulunmaktadır. Türk edebiyatı, özelde Türk romanı kimlik oluşturma düzleminde önemli işlevler üstlenen temel kaynak olmuştur. Toplum ve kimlik alanındaki dönüşümün tanığı olan romanlar, kimlik, modernleşme bakımından da okunabilmektedir.

Literature is an efficient factor in the formation and transformation of identity. It plays an active role in the process of identification of the reader. Several sorts of literature such as narrative, novel and poetry take their own parts as determinate of identity. Literature also contributes directly to the formations of national, political or religious and cultural identities. Turkish literature, particularly Turkish novel has been one of the basic sources of the construction of all sorts of identities. These novels which are witnessing the social and cultural transformations of their times are good occasions for reading the Turkish process of modernization and the formation of identity.
