Beslenme Bilgi Düzeyinin Değerlendirilmesinde Sağlık Okuryazarlığı Yeterli mi?

Sağlık okuryazarlığı bireylerin kendi kendilerine sağlıkla ilgili doğru kararlar alabilmeleri, alınan kararları uygulayabilmeleri ve bu bilgilere ulaşmak, bilgileri anlamak ve değerlendirmek için gerekli bilgi, motivasyon ve beceriye sahip olmaları olarak tanımlanabilir. Sağlık okuryazarlığı sadece hasta olan bireyler için değil, sağlıklı olan bireyler için de önemli bir konudur. Başta Yetişkinlerde İşlevsel Sağlık Okuryazarlığı Testi (Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults, TOFHLA), En Yeni Yaşamsal Bulgu (Newest Vital Sign, NVS) ve Tıpta Yetişkin Okuryazarlığının Hızlı Tahmini (Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine, REALM) olmak üzere, sağlık okuryazarlık düzeyinin belirlenmesi için birçok farklı araç geliştirilmiştir. Sağlık okuryazarlığının önemli bileşenlerinden biri olan beslenme okuryazarlığı ise, beslenmeyle ilgili konularda uygun kararları verebilmek için gerekli hizmetleri ve temel beslenme bilgilerini anlama, yorumlama ve bilgilere ulaşabilme yeteneğine sahip olması olarak tanımlanabilir. Beslenmeye bağlı kronik hastalıklardan korunmak ve bu hastalıkların önlenebilmesinde, bireylerin beslenme bilgi düzeylerinin belirlenmesi çok önemli bir konudur. Ancak beslenme okuryazarlık düzeyinin belirlenmesi için ülkemizde henüz geliştirilmiş bir araç bulunmamaktadır. Sağlık okuryazarlığına yönelik geliştirilen araçlar da beslenme bilgi düzelerinin değerlendirilmesinde yetersiz kalmaktadır. Bu yüzden bireylerin sağlığın önemli bileşenlerinden biri olan beslenmeyle ilişkili konulardaki gerçek bilgi düzeylerinin değerlendirilebilmesi için geçerli ve güvenilir araçlar, konuyla ilgili uzmanlar tarafından geliştirilmelidir. Bu derleme yazıda beslenme bilgi düzeyinin değerlendirilmesinde sağlık okuryazarlığının önemi ele alınmıştır

Is Health Literacy Adequate in Assessing Nutrition Knowledge Level?

Health literacy can be defined as individuals having the right knowledge, motivation and skill to make the right decisions about themselves, to apply the decisions and to reach, understand and evaluate this information. Health literacy is not only an important issue for hospitalized individuals but also for healthy individuals. Many different tools have been developed to determine the level of health literacy, especially Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (TOFHLA), Newest Vital Sign (NVS) and Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine (REALM). Nutrition literacy, one of the important components of health literacy, is defined as the degree to which individuals can obtain, process and understand information about basic nutrition needed to make healthy decisions. It is very important to determine the level of nutritional information of individuals in the prevention of chronic diseases related to nutrition and prevention of these diseases. However, there is not yet a tool developed in Turkey to determine the level of nutrition literacy. Therefore, valid and reliable nutrition literacy tools should be developed by relevant experts to evaluate correctly the levels of knowledge in nutrition-related subjects, one of the important components of the health of the individual.
