New Antique Site Found in the Kaystros (Minor Meander) Plain / Hacı Hasanlar Village near Birgi and Findings

Three ceramic and five glass objects found on 25 August 1981 on land belonging to Mustafa Girgin in Hacı Hasanlar, a village located five kilometers to the north-east of the town of Birgi in the county of Ödemiş and province of İzmir, that were then delivered over to the Ödemiş Gendarmes, are being safeguarded since in the Tire Museum. These eight objects were dated by comparing them with parallel examples of firm date and were found to date from between the end of the 3rd century BC and the 4th century AD. It appears strongly certain that these were grave offerings. For this reason, the data at hand is evidence that this necropolis in the village of Hacı Hasan in Ödemiş's region of Birge, the site from which they were excavated, was in use at least from the end of the 3rd century BC to the 4th century AD. We must next search for the related settlement to this site in the nearby environs. it is known that there certain antique settlements in the area: Dioshieron in the south west of the Hacı Hasanlar Village, Koloe (Kiraz) at the south east, Daredda (near Elbi) and Tarigya/Targya (near Akpınar Village in Çavuşdağı), Diginda (Kayacık Asar) and Euadsa (between Dioshieron and Koloe). There are no written documents relating Hacı Hasanlar Village and/or its near environs to any of the aforementioned sites. All the same, these rich findings are evidence of the archeological importance and richness of the necropolis area and/or the existence of a settlement in the region.
