Investigating artificial intelligence anxiety levels of candidates in different occupational groups

Technological developments can be anxiety-provoking for many people due to adaptation problems, having to learn new things, losing jobs, not being able to comprehend how technological developments work and possible negative consequences of technology. In the current research, we focused on one of the greatest technological developments, artificial intelligence (AI) and AI anxiety among young adults who are about to start a new career in different faculties. For this aim, 559 university students aged between 18 to 25 were recruited. Students were from the faculties of education, arts and science, fine arts, law, communication, engineering and medicine. In addition to the total score of AI anxiety, we also considered the subsections of AI anxiety: Learning, Job replacement, Sociotechnical blindness and AI configuration. Results showed that the reported AI anxiety scores are at a medium level and engineering and law students reported relatively low scores. These students also reported relatively low anxiety scores on the learning and job replacement subsections. These findings and possible theoretical and practical implications are discussed based on the current literature.
