The Importance Of Microalgal sensu lato Biodiversity Living In Extreme Environmental Conditions In Turkey
Microalgae sensu lato are photosynthetic, mostly unicellular microorganisms living in various types of habitats. Algae have a long history from past to now, and they have unique potential of adaptation to very harsh environments. There are harsh environmental conditions in the world that limit the living conditions for many living organisms. These hard conditions are described as extreme for living organisms, and the residents of these environments are called extremophiles. Algal biotechnology is gaining momentum so fast, while rapid advances have been made in all biotechnological fields recently. Algal biotechnology is including the production of renewable energy, production of various kinds of commercially important biomolecules, use of microalgae in biological wastewater treatments and many other groundbreaking biotechnological applications, which have many applications in large industrial areas such as energy, medicine, cosmetics. There are significant obstacles to algal biotechnology applications and industrial production of algae. In recent years, the isolation and cultivation of extremophilic species and the creation of algal culture collections have gained more importance. In this review, general information about algae is given, and the importance of algae, algal studies and their usage potentials and algal biotechnology studies in our country are emphasized.
