The Seed Mucilage Contents in Some Taxa of Thlaspi L. sensu lato (Brassicaceae) and Their Importance in Terms of Ecological

The seeds of seven Thlaspi sensu lato taxa (T. arvense, T. kotschyanum, T. perfoliatum, T. annuum, T. praecox subsp. praecox, T. densiflorum and T. alliaceum) have mucilage cells on the surface and they are produced myxospermy cover formation throughout hydration. The mucilage in these taxa formed of the pectins or cellulose. The mucilage cells in the examined taxa were found different anatomical layers in seeds. In addition, there were differences in columellae shapes in the examined Thlaspi taxa, which are in prominent, reduced or flattened. Furthermore, soil adhesion capacities of the examined taxa varied from 39 mg to 271 mg. The mucilage may have a key role in the seed dispersal and colonization of the new habitat in Thlaspi taxa.
