THE PLACE OF THE GENERATIVE LEXICON THEORY IN SEMANTICS

There are many theoretical studies on semantics that constitute both thinkers and linguists' interest area. Within the historical development, as these theoretical approaches sometimes complete each other and sometimes differ from each other, they enabled the researchers to make brand new opennings. Particularly in the last twenty years, the Generative Lexicon Theory has been one of the theories that emphasize the importance of items forming the sentence and their position within the sentence in the identification of sentence meaning. The theory based on the Compositionality Principle indicates the importance of utilizing the meaning of the words co-occurring while specifying the meaning of the whole sentence. In this article, after presenting a brief background on the historical development of semantics studies, the theoretical contributions the theory makes to the studies of semantics are discussed with examples in details.
