Amerikan Ulus Mitlerinin Sorgulanması Olarak Gazap Üzümleri

Bu makalenin amacı, bir roman uyarlaması olan ve Büyük Bunalım dönemine odaklanan Gazap Üzümleri (John Ford, 1940) filminin gösterenlerini Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin temel ulus mitleri açısından incelemek, filmin bu ulus mitleriyle tarihsel gerçeklik arasındaki çelişkilere odaklanan eleştirel söylemini açığa çıkarmaktır. Bu nedenle film çözümlenirken Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin uluslaşma sürecinin kurucu mitlerini oluşturan temel kültürel metinlerin ve filmde yansıtılan dönemin toplumsal koşullarını içeren tarihsel verilerin filmin teması, konusu ve olay örgüsü açısından karşılaştırılması yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Filmin hikâyesini oluşturan olayların ulusal mitlerdeki karşılığı bulunmuş, mitlerde yer alan içerikler incelenmiş, filmdeki olayların içerikleri ve ulusal mitlerin içerikleri arasındaki farklara odaklanılmış ve bu farklar mitlerin içerikleri açısından yorumlanmıştır. Farkları en uygun biçimde yorumlayabilmek için eleştirel kuramlardan ve film araştırmalarından yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda filmin, ulusal mitleri krizin etkilerinden biri olan toplumsal çözülmeyi engellemek ve kolektif hafızadaki bütünleşme duygusunu yeniden kurmak için kullanmadığı görülmüştür.

Grapes of Wrath as Questioning the National Myths of America

This article aims to examine the signifiers of the movie Grapes of Wrath (John Ford, 1940) which is a novel adaptation and based on the Great Depression period, in terms of the fundamental national myths of the United States of America, to reveal the movie’s critical discourse which focuses on the contradictions between the national myths and historicity. Therefore, the study compares the fundamental cultural texts constituting the founding myths of the United States of America’s nation formation process with the historical data including the social conditions of the period that is reflected in the movie in terms of the theme, topic and plot of the movie when analyzing it. In this regard, it has been found the correspondences of the incidents constituting the story of the movie in the national myths, examined the contents of the myths. Critical theories and film studies were used to interpret the differences in the most pertinent way. As a result, it has been observed that the movie did not use the national myths to prevent the social disintegration which is one of the effects of crisis or to re-establish integration in the collective memory.
