A comparison of the effectiveness of two different physiotherapy methods after upper abdominal surgery

Objective: To compare the effects of breathing exercises and incentive spirometry on blood gas values and hemodynamic parameters in the immediate postoperative period following upper abdominal surgery. Method: Forty-one patients who had undergone upper abdominal surgery were included in the study. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. Breathing exercises, forced expiration and coughing techniques were applied to the Group 1 patients. Incentive spirometry, forced expiration and coughing techniques were applied to the Group 2 patients. The procedures in both groups were repeated 5-10 times hourly for six hours, starting 30 minutes after extubation. Before and after each treatment heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) were measured. Blood gas values were measured before the treatment, and again after the treatment at the third and sixth hours. Results: We found that in both groups there were statistically significant increases in PaO2 and pH values after the treatment (p<0.05). The PaC02 values in group 2 significantly decreased at the 6th hour (p<0.05). Conclusion: Breathing exercises and incentive spirometry treatments following upper abdominal surgery do not have any negative effects on haemodynamic parameters. They significantly improved oxygenation, but there were no differences between the two methods.
