Relationship between the duration of sexual abstinence and semen parameters

OBJECTIVE: Semen analysis, the assessment of the macroscopic and microscopic properties of ejaculate in order to predict the reproductive capacity of a man, is influenced by some intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the duration of sexual abstinence on conventional semen parameters.MATRERIAL and METHODS: One hundred-seventy patients with normal semen analysis in our andrology laboratory between January 2015 and June 2017 were included in the study. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to their sexual abstinence periods: 0–1 days (30 patients), 2–5 days (90 patients) and 6–7 days (50 patients) and the volume, pH, concentration, and motility rates were compared between groups.RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 31.06±6.08 years and there was no statistically significant difference among the groups. In the semen analysis of the patients; the volume, concentration and immotility sperm rates were increased, total motility and progressive motility rates were decreased significantly with the duration of sexual abstinence. There was no statistically significant difference between groups in terms of pH and non-progressive motility rates.CONCLUSION: The results of this study show that as the duration of sexual abstinence increases, the volume and sperm concentration increases and the motility decreases in semen analyses of normal healthy individuals. We consider that these data will be useful to evaluate semen analysis
