A STAMP SEAL FROM NİĞDE REGION AND FOUR SEAL IMPRESSIONS FOUND IN ACEMHÖYÜK

Öz A stamp Seal recently acquired by the Kayseri Archaeological Muscum* and some of the stamp and cylinder scal impressions discovercd during the excavations at Acemhöyük have given us an opportunity to study a signi- ficant group of Anatolian. seals. Tlıese are of tke type known as hammer-headed scals, classified by Hogarth according to the form of the handlc, and cylindcr- stamp scals. As Hogarth' writes, seals of this group are generally of hematite and marbie, but we know now that cxamples made of melal or other materials are also common. In comparison with the round-topped conical seals^, charac- teristic of Anatolia in the 18th century B.C., the number of these seals is con- siderably fewer. However, this group is of great imporlance from the point of view of the richness in seal subject-matter. Some of these seals have only designs on their bases, while in a cylindrical or prismatic form with four or eight sidcs is engraved with figurative and geometric designs on the sides in addition to its base.
