The relation between alexithymia and burnout levels of physicians

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the relation between alexithymia and burnout levels of physicians working in Malatya in relation with some sociodemographic variables. Method: The data from 384 physician were gathered according to sociodemographic form, Maslach Burnout Inventory and Toronto Alexithymia Scale. Results Alexithymia was not found in 79.3% (n=306), but in 20.7% (n=78) and emotional exhaustion (EE), and depersonalisation (DP) levels were higher in alexithymic individuals while personal accomplishment (PA) levels were lower. Although there was no relation between academic degree, time at profession and alexithymia levels, the EE and DP levels were higher in residents and specialists. The ones who have worked for 6-10 years had low EE levels and the ones having worked for 5 years and less had higher DP levels. Conclusion: Our result is in individuals having burnout syndrome, the alexithymia levels get higher.
