Psychiatric aspects of gastroeosophageal reflux disease: A review

Gastroeosophageal reflux disease, which is the most common functional gastrointestinal system disorder, is caused by the reflux of the stomach and duedonum content to the eosophagus. The relationship between the gastrointestinal system and psychiatric disorders has been known throughout the history. The worsening of gastroeosophageal reflux symptoms with psychic stress has been shown in physiological and clinical studies. Eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa can show up with symptoms resembling gastroeosophageal reflux disease, or can cause problems in esophageal function themselves. Underlying psychiatric disorders can affect the outcome of medical and surgical interventions to gastroeosophageal reflux disease. Psychopharmacological ad psychotherapeutic interventions can contribute to the treatment of this illness. Psychiatrists have an important role in differential diagnosis and treatment of gastroeosophageal reflux disease.
